Barbara Hallum joined the Eastside Cardiology Associates practice in 1989 after moving from Portland, Oregon and became the first Adult Nurse Practitioner to be included in the practice. Her experience in cardiology included more than a decade of hospital based care of acute coronary patients as well as extensive cardiac rehabilitation experience. Barbara became an RN after completing undergraduate education at California State University. After her two children were of school age, she returned for a graduate education at the University of Portland, where she received a Master of Science degree, and completed national certification as an Adult Nurse Practitioner.
She enjoys family events, including weekly dinners with her adult children and their families, most specially a granddaughter born in 2006, travel, reading, regular trail walking, and gardening among her favorite activities.
"Caring for patients with heart disease is a team effort, and I find great joy in helping them and their families learn about and adapt to the many forms of heart disease. I believe the best outcomes occur when a holistic approach is used and the patient and family understand symptoms, treatments, and are active decision makers and participants in their own care. The excellent therapies now available to prevent and treat heart disease, as well as optimize quality of like for those affected, make my job very rewarding."
